A chat with Nick Allen, our ASM for the M4 corridor

We sat down with Nick Allen, our new Area Sales Manager for the M4 corridor, and asked him a few questions on how he’s settled in so far and what his main aims are in the role.

What was your first job?

While studying for my A levels I worked as a lifeguard, which wasn’t as glamorous as I’d hoped. My first full time job was as an apprentice floor layer.

How did you get into the flooring industry?

I’ve been in the flooring industry for over 20 years now, starting as a floor layer, then opening my own flooring business and running it for 10 years before selling it in 2019. I always say once you get into the flooring industry you can’t get out!

How would you describe your role?

To help contractors find solutions using the whole Bostik system, and to work alongside our fantastic network of distributors providing a great service for our customers.

What’s the best thing about working at Bostik?

Selling great products, which I have personally used for many years. We also have a great flooring team at Bostik, who are all as passionate about flooring as I am.

What do you think are the positive and negative aspects of the industry?

Positives are how friendly the trade is having made many friends over the years. I also enjoy finding solutions to overcome the issues we face in the flooring industry.

Negative is that there is still a lack of knowledge in some areas of the trade, but with our amazing Bostik Academy there really is no excuse… so get booked in!

What aspect are you most looking forward to about the new Bostik Academy facility?

Investing in our customers to help build knowledge and gain a long and trusted relationship.

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned so far in your career?

Nothing is ever as good or as bad as it seems. I have to give credit to my dad who taught me this, which definitely helped when I ran my own business. I find that when something goes wrong it’s always best to take time to reflect and things tend not to be as bad as first thought.

If you could hire any one person to be part of your team, who would it be and why?

I’m a great fan of the comedian Joe Wilkinson – I think he would be a brilliant salesman and great for team morale.

What do you think the future holds for the industry?

It’s been great to see the flooring industry bounce back from the pandemic with a huge 2021 and I can see it carrying on after a strong start in 2022.

What do most of your colleagues not know about you?

I’m a registered foster carer.

What has been your proudest moment?

Setting up my own business… Oh and the birth of my children.

Finally, if you could be any character from film or TV, who would you be and why?

The Grinch, according to my daughter.
